Our Oldest Allies – Stories of Trees

Wednesday 5th August @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

A book held open in front of trees

Tracy Chevalier & Jonathan Drori

There’s more to our leafy friends than meets the eye. The beech tree, the jarrah, the kola and the chestnut; the kauri and the blue quandong; the quince and the silver birch. They have all been on the planet long before humans appeared; we have co-opted them into our cultures, our science and por histories. Human lives are intertwined with trees.

We have held the banyan to be sacred. We have used gutta-percha to insulate the communications cables that criss-cross the earth. We have driven logs of alder underwater and built cities that still stand on them today. We depend on trees and perhaps sadly, they increasingly depend on us.

Husband and Wife team Tracy Chevalier (international best-selling author) and Jonathan Drori (tree lover and author of highly-acclaimed book Around the World in 80 Trees) explore the world of trees through different lenses from the comfort of their sofa.

How does a novelist capture their essence and use them as observers and characters in her stories? What do the bizarre secret lives of trees tell us about the wider world and our place in it?

During this live event, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions of Tracy and Jonathan.
